Koh Samui's enduring appeal as one of the world's top and renowned international holiday destinations has inspired

From an investment perspective, Samui also remains fairly inexpensive compared to more traditional European

About the Island of KOH SAMUI
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island with an area
of 228.7 km2, a population of over 63,000 and a hotel
occupancy rate of 73% as the number of visitors increases.
Abundant tourist resources, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and
coconut trees are present on the island.
HISTORY
The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries
ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and
southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to
1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name samui is
mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui. Some people believe that
the word "samui" derives from the Chinese word "saboey", or "safe haven", although there appears to be no credible
corroboration of this. Koh is the Thai word for "island". Koh Samui's economy now is based primarily on a successful
tourist industry.

GEOGRAPHY

Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 km northeast
of Surat Thani town (9⁰N, 100⁰E). The island measures
some 25 km at its widest point. It is surrounded by about
sixty other islands, which together compose the Ang Thong
Marine National Park (Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park) and
include many other popular tourist destinations, including,
Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Tao, and Koh Nang Yuan.
ECONOMY
Historically, the island's economy has been based around
agriculture and fishing, with coconuts as the main crop From
the 1980s onwards, tourism has become an economic factor
and is now the dominant industry. Koh Samui transport links
have made it a destination for tourists seeking to explore the other islands in the area.

TOURISM

The expansion of tourism in Koh Samui has resulted in growth in building resorts, bungalows, and luxury private
villas on the island. The island's total inventory of 17,479 hotel rooms in 2013 will be augmented by an additional
459 new rooms by 2015. A gradual shift in demand is seeing more Asian visitors and families, but the top three
source markets have been Germany, the United Kingdom, and Thailand.

CLIMATE - WEATHER SEASONS

During the high season, from December to February, temperatures on Koh Samui can reach up to 30⁰C (86⁰F). Brief
tropical rain showers occur mostly in December. From March to June it becomes very hot up to 40⁰C (114⁰F),
with little or no rain. You will appreciate your air-conditioned accommodation during this time! The months of July to
September are hot with occasional rain. These are also popular months for visitors.

October and November see more rain than other months, though it generally doesn't rain every day. In contrast to
other regions of Thailand, Samui does not really have a well-defined rainy season but sometimes there are sunless
periods of a few days, especially during the monsoon month of November. The weather is quite difficult to predict
during this time, but being Samui, you're virtually assured of getting some great sunshine!

 

BEACHES

Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut & Maenam Beaches
Koh Samui beaches are world-famous for their fine white sands and crystal clear waters, as well as the wild parties
under the soft light of the full moon. Bordered by nodding coconut trees to one side and lapped by the beautiful Gulf
of Thailand to the other, they are just the kinds of beaches you find in the ads and exactly what you picture when
you think of a tropical coastline.
Naturally, not all of the beaches in Koh Samui play host to nightly parties. Most offer peace and relaxation while
some are almost entirely deserted at all hours, providing perfect isolation. The majority offer everything you could
want or need from a day by the sea. Get a massage, have your hair braided, buy barbecued chicken or sarongs,
get to know the locals or simply doze off and chill out.

RESTAURANTS & DINING
The sheer quantity and variety of Koh Samui restaurants ensures that you need never go hungry on the island!
From delicious local snacks to international five-star cuisine, every taste is catered to. No matter where you're from
or what food you like, you'll find it somewhere on Samui for you. The range of restaurants, cafés, street stalls, beach
vendors, bakeries and local places to eat is huge.
Head to Chaweng Beach for its high concentration of internationally-acclaimed restaurants, or stop in Lamai for high
quality, reasonably priced Thai food. Fancy dining underneath the stars on a moonlit beach? Or in a chic restaurant
with a live band? Or maybe in a hilltop restaurant with a fantastic view? There are restaurants in Koh Samui which
offer all of this and more.

SHOPPING & Fun 

There are hundreds of bargains to be found while shopping in Koh Samui. While almost every corner of the island
has a store worth visiting, the main shopping sites are in Chaweng, Lamai and Nathon. Chaweng offers the most
choice and Lamai has a nice range of quirky little stores, but Nathon usually has the cheapest deals.
Thailand is famous for its copies of almost everything, from watches to trainers to CDs, and Koh Samui shopping is
no exception. Such products can generally be found in the smaller local markets. Most department stores offer only
genuine products and have fixed prices, but you can bargain almost everywhere else. Just keep
it polite and friendly to reach a price everyone is happy with.

ACTIVITIES & SPORTS

There is a great deal of variety available when it comes to Koh Samui activities. From the wild, mountainous interior
to the tropical seas surrounding the little island, there is something to do at every step. For the thrill-seekers, pit
yourself against the rocky cliff faces between Lamai and Chaweng or surf the waves on a kiteboard. Check out the
local wildlife on a quad bike jungle safari or grab a snorkel and explore the reefs.
