Kamphaeng Phet is a province that is located in the lower northern area of Thailand and is one of the seventy seven provinces in the country. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Kamphaeng Phet from the north in the clockwise direction are Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, and Tak. That name Kamphaeng means ‘wall’ in the Thai dialect and phet means ‘diamond’, this refers to the wall that the region served as which was as strong as a diamond to push away the Burmese during the Ayutthaya period. The original name of the area was Khao Kampeng which meant that it was a mountain wall between the countries. The main river in the province is the river Ping which is a tributary of the Chao Phraya River. The west of the province is covered in mountains and forests but the east is mostly flat river plains. The total land area covered by the province is a little more than eight and a half thousand square kilometres while it houses within itself a population of around 727,807 as is recorded by the census conducted in 2018. Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park
This is an archaeological site in the province and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Sukhothai Historical Park and Si Satchanalai historical park. The park features archaeological remains of historic cities like the Mueang Chakangrao, Mueang Nakhon Chum and Mueang Trai Trueng. The structures found are usually large and are made with laterite. The religious sites that are found on the bank of the Ping River at Nakhon Chum are smaller and made of brick.
Mae Wong National Park
This is a national park located in the vicinity of the province which was declared as a national park I on 14th September 1987. The park was the 55th national park in Thailand. The area covered by Mae Wong is fairly large with covering the Mae Wong and Mae Poen districts if Nakhon Sawan Province and Pang Sila Thong district of Kamphaeng Phet province.
