What do you need to know about Koh Tao Laem Tien?

Koh Tao is an island in Thailand and is part of the Chumphon Archipelago on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand. It covers an area of about 21 square kilometres. Administratively it is a subdistrict (tambon) of Ko Pha-ngan District (Amphoe) of Surat Thani Province. As of 2006, its official population was 1,382. The main settlement is Ban Mae Hat. The economy of the island is almost exclusively centred on tourism, especially scuba diving. Scuba diving is extremely popular in Ko Tao due to clear visibility, inexpensive pricing and the range of sea life to be seen.

Koh Tao was uninhabited, with only the occasional fisherman from the neighbouring islands, looking for shelter in a storm or just resting before continuing on his journey. It would appear from old maps and descriptions that this island was known by European cartographers and mariners as "Pulo Bardia", indicating that it was first settled by Malayo-Polynesian peoples. The old maps show a chain of three islands aligned north-south and lying off the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The most northerly and smallest of these islands is marked P. Bardia, the name it had until the early 1900s. The best map example is by John Thornton from The English Pilot, the Third Book, dated 1701, but the specific map of the Gulf of Siam is dated around 1677. On 18 June 1899, King Chulalongkorn visited Ko Tao and left as evidence his monogram on a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay next to Sairee Beach. This place is still worshipped today.

Why to invest in a property in Laem Tien

Koh Tao has a reputation for being a dive and party island. And while both those things are true — and Koh Tao does them proud — there is so much more to this little island than that. We’ve got plenty to landlubbers busy during the day: a trapeze school, Muay Thai gyms, a Thai language school, and miles of beautiful marked hiking trails.

Well, maybe they aren’t so much trails as dirt paths likely to be washed away at the slightest hint of rain, and maybe they aren’t exactly marked so much as known pretty well among the locals who might draw you a map if you ask nicely, and maybe they aren’t so much beautiful as slightly overgrown and unkempt. But one of the things that you can do here is hike, and hike to your hearts content. And if you do, you’ll be rewarded — with a great workout, with a look into the raw jungle, with the thrill of being a bit of an explorer, and depending on what path you choose, with a tropical beach or a breath-taking viewpoint awaiting you at the other end.

The hike to Fraggle Rock is one of the most popular on Koh Tao — it’s a moderate to hard trek, the route is easier than others to follow, and the payoff is spectacular. This place has been seen to be avoided by many people the first time they travel to Thailand for the lack of social activities, but this is one of the most beautiful places in the country and is a must visit.

Like with most hiking adventures on Koh Tao, the first step is to find directions. They offer rock climbing in the area — and arranging a map from the locals isn’t going to be a big problem if you behave properly and ask them nicely. While some of it may be a tad unclear to someone new to Koh Tao, you would b able to figure it out after some concentration.

Another very popular hike on Koh Tao, due to its easy access from Sairee and the sparkling beach on the other end, is the hike to Laem Tien Bay.  This is an incredibly straightforward route to follow, no special map required — as long as you can find the start of the path. Again, starting at Sairee you’ll walk up towards the gym, following the main road up until the first really steep hill. There you’ll find Tarna Align Resort — turn right and walk up the road with the resort on your left. Feel free to ask “Laem Tien?” with a pointed finger to anyone sitting or working around, but don’t be surprised if you get a blank smile in return because most of the time the locals will not understand the language ou speak. If you speak Thai, the trip is just going to be magical and something that you can never expect.
