Pattani, South - Thailand
What do you need to know about Pattani?
Pattani is one of the seventy-seven provinces and is located in the southern part of the country. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Pattani from the southeast point in the clockwise direction would be Narathiwat, Yala, and Songkhla. Pattani is situated on the Malay Peninsula and right on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the north. The south of the province is dominated by the Sankalahari mountain range including the Budo-Su-ngai Padi National Park on the border line with Yala and Narathiwat. The name when translated means “this beach”, although this is only one theory whereas another one states that it means “virgin nymph”. The surprising part is that Pattani was not included in the Anglo-Siamese treaty signed in 1909 and remained under the rule of the Siam kingdom. The provinces Yala and Narathiwat were originally a part of the Pattani province but were later split off to form separate provinces of their own in the 20th century. The total land area by the province is 1,940 square kilometres and houses a population of 718,077 as per the records of the census conducted in 2018. There are 12 districts within the province which are then divided into 115 sub-districts and 629 villages.
