The province was originally known as Mardelong in the Malay dialect from the time the area was under the influence of the Malay-Muslim people. The total land area the province of Phatthalung covers is 3,424 square kilometres while being home to a population of 525,044 as per the records of the census conducted in 2018. The district contains within itself 11 districts which are then further divided into 65 sub districts and 626 villages. The province has the 177-metre-high Phu Kao Ok Thalu mountain and the provincial tree and flower are the Shorea roxburghii.
