Trat is a province in Thailand which is located on the eastern side of the country and is the easternmost province which is situated along the Thai coast. The history of Trat has been found to date back to the seventeenth century when the lands were under the rule of the Ayutthaya kingdom under the reign of King Prasat Thong. After the Ayutthaya fell to Burmese in 1767, the province served as a checkpoint and served provisions for the King Taksin the Great. During the French-Thai war from 1940-41, The French navy had seized the province of Trat when they attacked the surprised Thai warships and caught them unprepared. After three of Thai ships had been destroyed by the French the Japanese government signed a treaty which brought the conflict to an end.
