Bang Rak is located at the south western part of Bangkok city and is one of the fifty districts that are present within the city. The neighbouring districts surrounding Bang Rak from the east to north in the clockwise direction would be Amphoe Phra Pradaeng of Samut Prakan District, Thung Khru, Chom Thong and Thon Buri. The district is on the west coast if the Chap Phraya River and Bang Kho Laem and Yan Nawa districts bound Bang Rak across the river in the clockwise direction from the north. The area of the district was originally planned as a frontier for Thonburi when it was the capital of Thailand as decided by King Taksin. Later rearrangements of boundaries led the district to fall under the Thonburi district as an amhoe, it moved around two more districts namely, Nakhon Khuan Khan and Samut Prakan District before returning to Thonburi. Latern in 1988, a part of the Bang Rak district was split off to form a new district by the name Thung Khru. The total land area covered by the district is 15.782 square kilometrs and it houses a population of 82,545 within itself as per the records of the census conducted in 2017.
