Thon Buri is one of the fifty districts present in Bangkok and is located in the western part of the city. Located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River the district was once a part of the Thon Buri district but later became a part of Bangkok after Thon Buri was merged with it. The neighbouring districts surrounding Thon Buri from the north in the clockwise direction are Bangkok Yai, Phra Nakhon (across Chao Phraya River), Khlong San, Bang Kho Laem (across Chao Phraya), Rat Burana, Chom Thong, and Phasi Charoen. Along with the native inhabitants, Thon Buri was earlier settled by foreigners, the Chinese merchants used to live here and after the fall of the Ayutthaya kingdom to the Burmese, the district was inhabited by the Portuguese. Originally the district was called Ratchakhrue because a Wat situated at a short distance, carried the same name. It was named as Bang Yi Ruea on 11th July 1916 and later, on 17th April 1939, the name was finally changed to Thon Buri and was merged with Bangkok in December 1971 which forms the current area of Bangkok. The total land area covered by Thon Buri is about 8.551 square kilometres while housing a population of 109,482 as per the records of the census conducted in 2017. The district is served by the Bangkok Skytrain in three stations Pho Nimit, Talad Phlu and Wutthakat. Another station lies just outside Ton Buri and can wasily be accessed by people living in Thon Buri district. The train goes through the Wongwian Yai station in Khlong San district.

Bangkok Mass Transit system BTS was initially developed in 1999 by the BTS Group to run the above ground train along Sukhumvit Road. in 2004, an underground subway system was constructed by MRT or Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA).
