Bueng Kan is also known as Bung Kan and is the 77th province of Thailand. It was established by the Act Establishing Changwat Bueng Kan, BE 2554 in the year 2011. The province is located in the upper north eastern part of the country and is given its name after the central districts of the province Mueang Bueng Kan. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Bueng Kan from the south in the clockwise direction are Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, and Nong Khai Province. To the north and east, it borders Bolikhamsai Province of Laos. The province was first planned to be established during the year 1994 but was not sanctioned by the Council of Ministers. The proposal to declare Bueng Kan as a separate district again rose in 2010 and a poll was taken then, more than ninety per cent of the residents in the Nong Khai province supported the idea and the Council of Ministers also sent the bill to the National assembly which said that the proposal had met the criteria for approval. On February 7th 2011 the National Assembly approved of the bill and finally, the act was published in the Government Gazette on 22nd March 2011 and had come into effect from the next day.
