Loei is a province located in the upper north eastern part of Thailand and is one of the seventy-seven provinces in the country. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Loei from the east in the clockwise direction would be Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nongbua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok. In the north, it borders Xaignabouli and Vientiane Province of Laos. The province of Loei is mostly mountainous, but the Loei town is in a fertile land which is surrounded by mountains. The Loei River is a tributary of the bigger Mekong River and flows through the province and is a part of the northern boundary separating the province from Laos. Later during the year 1907, the province of Loei was established by King Chulalongkorn. The total land area of present day Loei is about eleven and a half thousand square kilometres and houses a sparse population of 642,773 as per the records of the census conducted in the year 2018. The province is divided into fourteen districts, which are then further divided into eighty-nine subdistricts and 839 villages.
