Mukdahan is one of the seventy-seven provinces of Thailand and is located in the upper north eastern part of the country also known as Isan. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Mukdahan from the south in the clockwise direction would be Amnat Charoen, Yasothon, Roi Et, Kalasin, Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom. To the east, it borders the Mekong River, across which lies Savannakhet Province of Laos to which it is joined by the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge. The province is situated in the valley of the Mekong River and houses the Phu Phan mountains in the western part of the province. The Mukodahan city was first founded in the year 1770 by Lord Chanthakinnaree of Phonsim, it was formerly directed within Monthon Udon Thani and later, in 1907, it became a district of the Nakhon Phanom province and was upgraded to provincial status on 27th September during the year 1982. The total land area covered by the province is a little less than four and a half thousand square kilometres and houses a population of about 352,282 as per the records of the census conducted in the year 2018. The province is divided into seven districts, which are then further divided into fifty-three subdistricts and four hundred and ninety-three villages.
