Nakhon Phanom is one of the seventy-seven provinces in Thailand and is located in the upper north eastern part of the country. The neighbouring provinces surrounding Nakhon Phanom from the south in the clockwise direction are Mukdahan, Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom. To the northeast, it borders Khammouan of Laos. The province is located in the Mekong river valley and the area of the province is mostly covered in plains. The northern part of the province is covered in forests and the main river in the area is the Songkhram River, the southern part of the province ha only one notable water body in the form of the Kum River and the capital of the province is located on the banks of the Mekong River. Although the name Nakhon Phanom translates to ‘city of mountains’ and was given by King Rama I, there aren’t any mountains in the province of Nakhon Phanom itself. There are limestone mountains present on the other side of the Mekong river in the city of Thakhek in Laos. The province covers a total land area of around five and a half thousand kilometres and houses a population of 718,786 as per the records of the census conducted in the year 2018.
