The district of Pathum Wan is located in central Bangkok and is surrounded by seven neighbouring districts namely, Ratchathewi, Watthana, Khlong Toei, Sathon Bang Rak, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, and Dusit if seen from the north in the clockwise direction. The district which was established in 1914 was named after a Buddhist temple Wat Pathum Wanaram which when literally translated means ‘lotus forest temple’ and the Sa Pathum Palace which means ‘lotus pond palace. Both the monuments were made on the order of King Rama IV and given names due to the abundance of lotus flowers in the Khlong Saen Saep region. The district is further divided into four sub-districts which are

  • Rong Mueang
  • Wang Mai
  • Pathum Wan
  • Lumphini

The hotels and the sidewalks are decorated with lights every year around Christmas and New Year. It was first started by Peninsular Plaza and the Regent Hotel and was slowly adapted by all other shopping complexes and even by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration which provides the lights for the BTS Skytrain pillars. Transportation in this district is heavily dependent on the BTS and MRT lines passing through the district. The stations of the MRT line are Hua Lamphong, Sam Yan, Si Lom and Lumphini. The BTS stations include Siam, National Stadium, Ratchadamri, Chit Lom and Phloe Chit.

  • Jim Thompson’s house – A former architect in New York City, Jim Thompson wounded up in Thailand after World War II as an officer in the Strategic forces. The construction of his compound comprising of six Thai houses was made by importing several upcountry buildings some as old as 150 years.
