Located in the middle region of Bangkok, Watthana is one of the districts located near Sukhumvit road, Bangkok. The neighboring district surrounding Watthana if checked from the north in the clockwise direction are Ratchathewi, Huai Khwang, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei and Pathum Wan. Spread around the district is home to over 230,000 people. The district was originally a part of the Khlong Toei district and was announced independent in 1998. The name was given by Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Watthana meaning ‘development’ is one of the most developed areas in Bangkok. The district is further divided into three sub-districts which are 

  • Khlong Toei Nuea
  • Khlong Tan Nuea 
  • Khanong Nuea

The transportation in this region is heavily dependable on the public railways, the BTS, BRT and MRT train lines cross through the district and Sukhumvite Road. The BTS Skytrain stations in the district are Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong and Phra Khanong. The station in the MRT line is the only one Sukhumvit station on the Blue Line. The important educational institutions in the district are Srinakharinwirot University, Siam Society, Japan Foundation and Academia Italiana Thailand. 

Few places of attraction in Watthana.

There aren’t a lot of places that attract tourists in Watthana but it is neighboring with some of the biggest attractions in the city but they are placed in other districts although not at a distance that causes fatigue if travelled some of them are. 

  • Erawan Shrine – This shrine is not particularly old as when compared to Bangkok standards, it was finished in 1956. Although not the oldest this is one of the more active ones in the country. Located at Bangkok’s one of the most congested intersections, next to the Grand Hyatt Erawan and the Chitlom Skytrain station, the shrine is always full of enthusiasts who enjoy the mix of burning incense, dancers in traditional dresses and innumerable people praying for their wish to come true.
  • Siam Square – Recognized as the busiest place in Thailand, Siam Square is heaven for shoppers. With fashion, education and cultures diverging into a single place to form such a magnificent attraction are very rare. The area is also open for the whole night when the sidewalk is lit up with people from all around the world.
  • Chuvit Garden – this is a public park made by a massage parlour turned politician Chuwit Kamolvisit from his own plot of land with the size of about 2.4 square kilometres and net worth was estimated to be around 1,250 million Baht when opened in December 2005.
