The neighboring district surrounding Watthana if checked from the north in the clockwise direction are Ratchathewi, Huai Khwang, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei and Pathum Wan. Spread around the district is home to over 230,000 people. The district was originally a part of the Khlong Toei district and was announced independent in 1998. The name was given by Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Watthana meaning ‘development’ is one of the most developed areas in Bangkok. The transportation in this region is heavily dependable on the public railways, the BTS, BRT and MRT train lines cross through the district and Sukhumvite Road. The BTS Skytrain stations in the district are Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong and Phra Khanong. The station in the MRT line is the only one Sukhumvit station on the Blue Line.
