The province of Nong Khai was originally the northern most area of the north-eastern provinces in Thailand, that was until the district was stripped off of its eight districts to form the new province Bueng Khan in 2011. The province of No0ng Khai is located in the upper north-eastern side of Thailand and the provinces surrounding it if went from the east in clockwise direction would be Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, and Loei. To the north, it borders Vientiane Province, Vientiane Prefecture, and Bolikhamxai of Laos. The province is situated beside the Mekong river and it also forms the border for Laos. The Thai Lao friendship bridge is also located in the province and it joins the two countries of Thailand and the Vientiane Prefecture. The bridge was built by the joint effort of the governments of Thailand, Laos and Australia in 1994. After the province was divided in 2011, it consists of nine districts which are further divided into sixty-two sub districts and seven hundred and five villages. The districts it is now divided are:
Nong Khai is rich in religious beauty as well as scenic beauty which you can find all over the province. Among the various things you can see in Nong Khai we have shortlisted some of the locations which you may find interesting, they are:
Phaya Nak cave: Located in Nong Khai this is a unique temple that you cannot anywhere else in the world along with this the temple is spread around an astonishingly large area of around eight and a half thousand square metres. According to history the building’s nine headed serpent and the underground cave duplication was built around 2007 during the anniversary of the establishment.
Skywalk: This is an incredible structure present in Wat Pha Tak Suea, it is built in a horse shoe shape and is able to withstand the pressure on it because of the four-centimetre-thick tempered and laminated glass which is clamped with iron to the foundation of the cliff. The total walking distance of the skywalk is sixteen metres out of which the pathway that consists of clear glass is fifteen metres long. The structure can withstand the weight of approximately twenty tourists or two thousand and five hundred kilograms.
The Sadet market: This market is located on the banks of the Mekong river and is the nucleus of products coming from Indochina or from Eastern Europe. The centre houses many products that are essential such as, processed foods, dried foods, clothes, electrical appliances and more. The stores open every day from seven in the morning to six o'clock in the evening and in addition to this the visitors can also try the popular Vietnamese wrap food at the market.
Though a major tourist attraction site Nong Khai is one of the cheapest areas in the country. If you’re looking for an inexpensive meal in a restaurant you would have to pay around 100 Baht for that. If you prefer to have a three-course meal in a mid-range restaurant with someone you should be ready to spend around 1000 Baht for that. A litre of milk would cost you about 55 baht and a kilogram of rice would be about 44 Baht. A dozen eggs would cost about 50 Baht. A taxi can be used to travel around the city with 35 Baht base fare and an increasing 16 Baht for every kilometre. A monthly pass can be made at the cost of around 600 Baht and if you would prefer to ride your own vehicle you should be ready to spend around 1,200,000 Baht for a general sedan car. If you are a first-time visitor you are sure to be amazed at the simple yet exciting living that goes on here.
If you are looking forward to settling down in Nong Khai, you would probably want to look at condos or apartments or Single houses for rent. Dependable on the size, type and location the condos range from 6,000 Baht to 40,000 Baht. If you’re looking for houses on rent you would have to pay around 15,000 Baht to around 85,000 Baht again depending on the size, location and type of the property. The real estate market in Nong Khai makes it one of the most accessible and safe in the whole country.
It is always more satisfactory to stay at one’s own place than paying a monthly rent and staying under a roof that isn’t yours.
